Hello friend!

Alright, here’s my honest thought in the place of meditating on scriptures. And its ok if you don’t agree with it, alright! But I’m very, very convinced about it.

You must have heard it severally. Sayings like….You need a mentor; A mentor will help you to discipline yourself; A mentor will guide you; A mentor will do this and do that… And of course it’s true, having a mentor in your area of interest in life will help you achieve a lot. We’ve heard this so much in the secular/business world, and now we have it in the church, in so many ministries, and it’s really a good thing.

The Lord Jesus Christ, for over 3years had 12 men with him called his disciples. He thought them so many things about himself, the Kingdom of God, and more, and also built them up for the ministry work ahead. We can see all of that in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

Paul the apostle had so much to do for Timothy, also mentoring him in ministry. You can read through his letters to Timothy in the books of 1 & 2 Timothy.

In the Old Testament, Prophet Eli mentored Prophet Samuel; Moses mentored Joshua; Prophet Elijah mentored Prophet Elisha. And you can go through the bible and see so many more examples.

But I have come to a certain new understand, that Mentoring [under people] is very good, but its not the only war forward as regards growing into the ministry or assignment God has planned for you. By this I mean if you really don’t have a close or distant person as your mentor, inline with your ministry or assignment or vision, don’t feel you’re utterly out of place. Yes, you would need help from different people here and there, maybe for counsel, advise, connections, financial support, etc. but none of whom is your ministry mentor. As long as you are in alignment with the Spirit of God you will be fine.

How Do I Know This?

I’ll give you a few examples from the bible… Joseph, David, Jesus Christ.

Joseph:

He was a little boy when his elder brothers sold him as a slave. He lived as a slave for many years in Portifer’s house, had problems with his master’s wife because he refused to sin against God. Was thrown into prison, and was still a very good prisoner, even helping others, and was a prisoner until the day Pharaoh would need him, and finally made him prime minister over Egypt. All through the period from his childhood slavery experience to being the prime minister of Egypt, there was really nobody to be his mentor, but the Spirit of God who taught him to fear God and do what’s right.

David:

He was a shepherd boy, abandoned in the desert to tend sheep. Even when Prophet Samuel came to his father’s (Jesse) house, he was not remembered until when all his elder brothers had been rejected by God. He spent his life in an isolated place, tending the sheep, and fellowshipping with and trusting in God. Also in the years King Saul was trying to kill him, he kept seeking and trusting in God. Nobody really mentored him to be a worshipper or king. Everything he knew came as a result of his fellowship and experiences with God alone.

Jesus Christ:

A careful look at the life of our Lord Jesus Christ, and you’ll see he never had any mentor in ministry like we have in churches and ministries today. Bible records that at age 12 he was found among elders asking questions that surprised them, and what he told his mother and father was “…do you not know I must be about my father’s business?” It took another 18yrs for him to start his ministry. Bible also says he grow in stature and knowledge and in favour with God and in favour with men. Luke 2:41-52.

These are all people who never had mentors like people have nowadays, for their life assignment or ministry or businesses. No specific person, but the Spirit of God. And the truth is they all had uncommon things to start in their generations.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a mentor for your career, ministry, etc. It will be too difficult for you to forge ahead without a mentor, unless God is really doing some special things on your behalf. But if you are the kind of person who has a God-given vision or assignment, and you just cannot find someone, near or far, who has gone ahead of you in that area, and who can be your mentor, or the Lord isn’t leading you to anyone. Don’t let it discourage you or weigh you down. The Holy Spirit is your main mentor. You can have teachers and advisers for different things in your life, but none of whom is your mentor.

Know this!

The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, is ever ready to teach you all things, as well as instruct, counsel and guide you all through life’s journey. Ps. 32:8-9, John 14:26, 1 John 2:20, 27. You can ask the Holy Spirit for help on any and every issue about your life, ministry, endeavours and all that concerns you. And I mean any and everything, without exception. If it matters to you, it matters to Him too.

So, mentoring by people is very good, but then its not the only way forward for what God will have you do. Be encouraged and stay close to the Holy Spirit.

God bless you greatly in Jesus name. Amen.

Shalom!
